Signs and Symptoms of Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI)

Have you or someone you love been involved in an accident that resulted in a brain injury? Are you worried about your finances and your future? Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a serious condition that induces a lot of physical and emotional pain and suffering on the injured person as well as his or her family. If your injury was caused in whole or in part by another person or entity’s negligence, then in California, you have the right to seek compensation. But the compensation process can be daunting and stressful, let alone the struggles with TBI. At Johnson Attorneys Group, we have an experienced lawyer who approaches each personal injury case from a comprehensive, compassionate standpoint. Contact us today for a free consultation.

Types and Severity of TBI

Traumatic Brain Injury: Symptoms & Signs

Traumatic brain injury can be mild to severe. In all cases, however, medical assistance is required for either full recovery or to prevent a worsening of symptoms. Below are some of the symptoms you can anticipate if you or a loved one has suffered a TBI.

Signs of Mild TBI

  • Physical symptoms include no loss of consciousness, but dazed; loss of consciousness for seconds to minutes; a headache; nausea; fatigue, sleeping more than normal, dizziness.
  • Sensory symptoms include blurred vision, ears ringing, unable to smell, sensitive to light or sound.
  • Cognitive symptoms include an inability to remember or to concentrate; mood swings; depression; anxiety.

Signs of Moderate to Severe TBI

  • Physical symptoms include the same as mild TBI in addition to the possibility of persistent or worsening headaches; repeating vomiting/nausea; convulsions or seizures; dilation on one or both pupils; clear fluid from nose or ears; loss of coordination; weakness; numbness; unable to wake up.
  • Cognitive symptoms include severe confusion; agitation; unusual behavior; combative; slurred speech; coma.

Signs of TBI in a Child

  • Not eating or nursing the same
  • Nonstop crying
  • Inconsolable
  • Unusual irritability
  • Unable to focus
  • Changed sleep behaviors
  • Depression
  • No interest in playing.

TBI Prognosis & Complications

The severity of the TBI will determine a person’s recovery and prognosis. But complications can hinder recovery, too. A person with mild TBI can recover in relatively short time, from months to a few years, if medical attention and mental exercises are conducted on a regular basis. For some with moderate to severe TBI, they may never fully recover, but consistent and appropriate medical assistance can prevent further deterioration and make the situation a little better over time.

Complications, however, can hinder recovery. Some complications include anything from nerve damage to seizures to blood vessel damage to fluid buildup to infections and to other possible problems. These complications can lead to coma, vegetative state, locked-in syndrome (when a person is aware of the surroundings but cannot communicate), and among other things, brain death. It is obviously in anyone’s best interests to seek the best care if suffering from a brain injury. Of course, you must have the resources to do so.

Seek Help Immediately: Medical & Legal

A TBI is not something that you can wait a day or two before deciding to go to a doctor. If you have been in an accident, you should seek medical assistance immediately. If the accident was caused in part or in whole by another person’s negligence, you also need to seek legal assistance.

You should know that in cases of TBI, an insurance company may try to settle with you quickly. They know that you are worried about finances, and they also know that TBI is not a simple case, such that serious complications can occur and increase the value of a settlement. You should not settle out of fear or intimidation. Once you settle, then there’s no going back to try to obtain more money to make the settlement fair and just. You must consult with an experienced lawyer. The sooner you do, the sooner an experienced lawyer can get to work on your case.
